Bessie Carmichael School Awarded $100,000 For LEED Certification

Recently the Bessie Carmichael School in the South of Market (SOMA) area of San Francisco received a grant from software manufacturer Adobe Systems, in conjunction with the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to green its campus, and the results uncover an inspiring renovation to a tight urban site. The original challenge in 2007 was to convert the school’s existing 60-child preschool into a 230 student K-8 school for the Filipino Community. The site had been maintained as a school facility predating the 1906 earthquake and was in serious need of repairs when the San Francisco Unified School District hired Plum Architects to redefine the school structure.

Technology Is Not So Scary
Forget the Silver Generation being weary of the onslaught of technology; people my age are sometimes stumped by it too. With manufacturers churning out futuristic, beyond imagination stuff; coping up with the functions and features on gizmos Enter Space Jam (not the movie!), a multi-user shared environment that makes communication between the tech-savvy and the not-so-savvy, easy. The setup actually just includes a camera sensor and a projector, the rest is just more technology conjured up by the designers.
Understanding Space Jam:
Everyday objects, such as a sticky note and a picture frame, act as input devices for the virtual world while the digital information is blended into the real environment through the projector and the camera.People, who have little knowledge about computer, not only can communicate with their family members through digital technologies, but also share their life with friends on the social networking sites. Friends and family can send the messages or photos with their favorite digital devices. Using the projector, the messages and photos can be displayed on the wall. They can leave a message to their family members by writing a physical sticky note, placing it on the wall and adding a tag, which indicates the person to whom this message is sent. The camera captures the content on the physical note, identifies the receiver, and the assigned date. Image recognition method is used to recognize the note from the wall image and cut the note image. The note image is then sent through Internet or MMS to the designated person on the assigned day. They can also browse digital photos by hanging a physical picture frame on the wall, just like the way they have been doing for years. They can hang a set of the photos by placing a pair of tags in a diagonal position on the wall. The photo slideshow is then displayed by the projector according to the position of these two tags. The tag on the top indicates the photo album they choose, while the tag on the bottom functions as the control button which is used to play, pause and resize the photo slideshow. A combination of recognition technology and multimedia software will handle photo browsing. The recognition module detects the triggered start/stop events of the photo browsing and notifies the multimedia software to operate the photo display.
The project was funded by INSIGHT center in Taiwan.
And the project leaders are Hsien-Hui Tang (design) and Wen-Jong Wu (IT)

Google Chrome Extension Keyboard Navigation

While the mouse is an essential component of any system, there are times when a person wants to restrict the usage of the mouse whilst increasing that of the keyboard. This is especially so if you are working on a laptop and are not wanting to use the touchpad. For all of you who prefer the keyboard instead of the mouse for navigation, you can install the Chrome Extension Keyboard Navigation software developed by akovalenko onto your system and get totally freed of the mouse.
Once installed, all you have to do is to activate the program by pressing Alt + G on your keyboard. This will ensure that all your pages are numbered and thereby accessible by pressing the relevant numbers on your keyboard instead of using the mouse to click on the page. The Google Chrome Extension Keyboard Navigation aims to reduce the overall usage of the mouse whilst increasing the usage of the keyboard, which is preferable to most individuals today.

Real-Life Water World: Futuristic Offshore Architecture
[ WebEcoist ]

As rising seas overtake the shores and the human population continues to grow, some experts believe well eventually have no choice but to live in a real-life water world, building hotels, homesteads and even entire cities on the open ocean. Forward-thinking architects are already planning for this possibility, and their futuristic designs range from Star Wars-inspired marine research facilities to luxurious undersea hotels.
Hydropolis Underwater Hotel

(images via: Builder Blog)
A vast luxury hotel bigger than Londons Hyde Park, with 220 guest suites, bars, restaurants, shops and theatersall located under the surface of the sea. While the Hydropolis Hotel sounds like a wonder of science fiction, its currently under construction in (where else?) Dubai. Located in the Arabian Gulf just off the coastline, the hotel will shuttle guests from land to the submarine complex through a train in a tunnel.
Waterpod Floating Eco-Habitat

(images via: TheWaterpod.org)
Imagine living on your own fully self-sustainable homestead, complete with a wind turbine, fresh organic food from your gardens, and a source of fresh purified water from a nearby river. Now, imagine that said homestead is actually a floating, movable island that could help your family survive the worst of climate change consequences. The Waterpod is its own little eco-habitat, a sustainable community built from recycled materials, and a group of artists built it and took it on a four-month journey down New Yorks East River in 2009.
Marine Research Facility Inspired by Star Wars

(images via: Builder Blog)
Marine research facilities dot coastlines around the world, but theyre usually not much to look at. The Facility at Sea would change that, with a surprising design inspired by Star Wars, trees and offshore oil platforms. The center structural element of each building is a trunk-like column that houses many of the facilitys most important functions, like energy storage, the engine room and the control room. Laboratories, classrooms and offices would take up the research spheres, while habitat disks will contain living areas. Meant to house scientists for 6-12 month periods, this design by Jason Mellard would be situated both above and below the surface of the water.
Eco-Friendly but Unrealistic Bering Strait Bridge

(images via: Inhabitat)
Its a fascinating concept, but one thats unlikely to ever become reality: an astounding eco-friendly bridge spanning the Bering Strait that would not only facilitate trade between the U.S. and Russia and protect wildlife, but serve as a visual spectacle unlike any structure ever built. The proposal by OFF Architecture envisions a self-contained, clean energy-powered ecosystem in harmony with marine life and would also feature a park and a Utopian village of tomorrow.
Poseidon Undersea Resort

(images via: One Nation Magazine)
If youve ever dreamed of sleeping 40 feet underwater and piloting your own personal submarine through a tropical lagoon, the Poseidon Undersea Resort is currently the only place in the world where you can actually do both. An elevator transports guests to little pods on the seafloor equipped with clear acrylic walls for a virtually uninterrupted view of the sea. For a pretty penny, guests can rent the luxurious Nautilus Suite, which is decorated in the fashion of Jules Vernes submarine. The Poseidon Undersea Resort opens in early 2010 and will cost $30,000 per couple per week.

15 Cool Hi-tech Spy Gadgets, Oh Wait…Creepy Gifts for Stalkers?
Do you have someone for whom you need a present but would classify as naughty and not nice? Do they have a desire for gadgets to make them feel like James Bond? There are spy gadgets designed to go undetected, products that were once considered science fiction, but can be purchased without needing to be a part of an elite secret service or military branch. Some of these spy gadgets barely squeak by as legal. So if you have a spy or spyette on your shopping list, perhaps one of these 15 hi-tech spy gadgets would be perfect for them. Oh wait . . . as the list goes down, they get creepy enough to almost induce full blown paranoia. Maybe these spy gadgets would be the perfect creepy gifts for stalkers?
Lasers

These are not toy lasers to play with indoors for your cat to chase around for your amusement. Wicked Lasers puts out two lasers straight out of some James Bond flick. On the left is the Elite Pro which has ridiculous burning power in so tiny a package. The military swears by it, using these tightly focused green beams like long distance matches for burning and melting. On the right is the Photonic Disruptor tactical laser. It was featured on Discovery Channel’s “Future Weapons”. Point the non-lethal versatile focused or unfocused beam towards potential threats at a distance and it will temporarily overwhelm a threat’s visual sense without causing permanent eye damage.
Bluetooth Spy

Micro spy earphones like the upper left have been in circulation, but Brickhouse Security brings it to a new level. The invisible spy Micro Bluetooth headset goes deep into the ear and is so low that it cannot be seen. Although it requires not batteries, it would take a super-strong magnet to pull it from your ear canal. That takes care of sound spying but Brickhouse has another Bluetooth spy gadget to be your secret ear and eye in the sky. This average looking and fully functional Bluetooth headset is so much more with a pinhole camera hidden deep within. No one will suspect that your Bluetooth headset is actually capturing covert video surveillance with audio.
Lighter Spy

Lighters can be used to conduct secret video surveillance or are ideal for any covert operation where gathering evidence is important for you. Besides using these lighters for their obvious purpose of fire, you can leave it in your home or office to record everything that is happening while you are gone. Are you not the type to carry a refillable lighter but a disposable cheapo? These spy lighters come in all shapes, colors and sizes.
80,000 Volt Electric Briefcase

If you are carrying around documents that cannot fall into enemy hands, or money or jewelry or anything vital to keep safe, then there are normal looking briefcases that can help you keep your valuables safe. Although they come in differing colors, all come with a remote control so you can shock the living daylights out of the thief. You can activate the screaming alarm by simply pushing a button on the remote control, but when you push a second button you will activate the electric shock alarm. Then the person who stole your suitcase will let go immediately! Nobody will be able to grab or take the suitcase without having the snot shocked out of them.
Cell Phone Spy

(image credits: Brickhouse Security, Eurospy Shop)
No matter what reason you come up with to need these cell phone spying devices, we are moving much closer into the realm of creepy stalker. The SIM card spy makes it possible to read deleted text messages and private data from any SIM card. Not enough James Bond for you? The bottom image is the world’s smallest, fully integrated GSM Listening Device. With an unlimited range, you can call from any phone and listen immediately to a conversation from anywhere in the world.
Tiniest Spy Cameras

Micro cameras are getting smaller every day. The top right is the world’s smallest cam, a pin hole size CMOS camera which you can see size-wise sitting upon a dime. For another dimension of creepy spying, there are cameras in screw heads. There are also all various sizes of button cams.

The Surreal & Colorful World of Artist Marco Escobedo

Illustrator and graphic designer Marco Escobedos work focuses on the surreal and fantastic, using high contrast and richly saturated colors to create scenes and characters that look like they could be from another planet. While its often serious and dark, there are also hints of playfulness and humor, as in his portrait of Michael Jackson sitting on a rhinoceros.
Each illustration is intricately detailed, and clearly the result of countless hours of work and experimentation manipulating photographs with all of the brushes, textures and effects that software like Adobe Photoshop can provide.

Like many digital artists, Escobedo started his career in traditional painting, taking several classes in it and learning skills that he would later apply to his digital work. But it wasnt long before he became enchanted with graphic design and began experimenting in programs like Corel Draw, Photoshop and Illustrator.

But it is unquestionably Photoshop that greatly encouraged me to undertake the development of my work, says Escobedo on his Flickr profile.

Creative Music Interaction
Touchtable is a PMP that is interactive and intuitive. It features a large controller wheel that surrounds the screen and performs just like a turntable. Its even sensitive to touch and pressure and when you use it in combo with the surrounding function buttons, it facilitates absolute user control over a track, through precise position, timing and pitch manipulation.
Features:
One function button controls the simultaneous switching to a secondary track, allowing the user to mix records on the fly, or to scratch samples over a track.Through the cue output, each track is directed to either the left or right headphone, the beat and pitch can then be matched, a cue point created, and the combined tracks mixed out the main phono output. Two devices can also be combined wirelessly at the click of a button, to act similarly to the traditional DJ set up, just at around 1:8 the scale. This function also allows for multiple users to mix and scratch tracks together, combining their own Touchtable devices through one output. The device not only adds interaction to the personal listening experience, but can be used for performance. The Touchtable can be plugged into a computer, where it acts as a midi device, working with built in software, allowing complete creativity and control over customization and music creation.Touchtable allows for complex interactions, comparable to a complete DJ set up, however the device itself is very simplistic: designed for ease of assembly/disassembly, interchangeability and miniaturization through technology. It is not only ultra portable, but cost effective, easy andable to use.
