The Rockefeller Foundation just awarded the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City$600,000 to make its 2007 Design for the Other 90% exhibition into an ongoing series. Inhabitat reported on the exhibition when it took place in 2007 and we were amazed by the innovation on display. So much of the great design we see is focused on the wealthiest 10% of the population, it’s nice to know that Cooper-Hewitt will be able to highlight more of the cutting-edge sustainable technology that is designed for the developing world.

Light Up Some Memory

Dedicated to Phillumeny, the Phillu is a matchbox shaped portable memory storage device with matchsticks that have 5 GB storage capacity. Nine sticks in the box, essentially translating to 45 GB collective capacity. The trick is that you really need to light the sticks to transfer the data.

To transfer data by sticks:

Push the case from behind to choose and pick an available stick. Put the stick head at the end of the striker.Strike the stick quickly along the striker adding pressure. Now the stick turns into burned black match, making it possible to give it to another Phillu owner to share your data without the need of any computer in between.Sharing your data with others will be completed after they plug in the stick to their own Phillu.

Designers Tip:
Do not let kids play with matches!

Rip Your Environment Apart

Augmented reality! That’s what we’re dealing with here. This right here is the “Scout – Portable Pedestrian Navigation Device” and it’s intended to be used by people traveling about, connecting then with local knowledge, wisdom, and GPS information to guide them. It’s a digital compass is what it is. It encourages “uninhibited exploration, discovery, documentation, and sharing.”

Can you imagine the games you could play with this lovely little thing?

The Scout has a screen, a camera, and a scroll wheel click button. As you know from using computer mice for years and years now, that’s all you need! With this device you could start a whole social-media revolution, bringing the people back to the streets!

Lemme know what you think about that.

Another interesting thing is the information Matt Marrocco has given us! In the submission we’ve got here of this project, we get all of the programs used to create it: Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino, and Hypershot. That’s awesome.

Do you agree with giving up your tools along with the design?

Very big questions in this very simple design.

Down & Dirty DIY: Humorous Low-Tech Hacks & Mods

Human ingenuity knows no bounds. We’ve been inventing and improvising since the dawn of time, and we’ll continue to do so as long as we have the will to survive and be comfortable. These projects show just how creative people can be – from mashing up unrelated items to make a supergadget to reinventing an item’s purpose, these hacks, tricks and mods are an amusing testament to the creativity of mankind.

Thailand Improvisations

German photographer Thomas Kalak delights in photographing the unusual, the offbeat, the oft-overlooked quirky parts of everyday life. Traveling through Thailand, he noticed the unshakable cheer and endless ingenuity of people there. When they have a need for an item that doesn’t exist, they simply make it out of available materials. The above images show two ingenious hacks: brake lights made from plastic bottles, red wrapping and light bulbs; and bike reflectors made from old CDs.

The improvisations documented by Kalak often involve simple solutions to everyday problems. The Coke can above is filled with water and suspended from a picnic table’s covering to keep the tablecloth from blowing away. The device next to it gives old, unmatched socks a new purpose: cleaning floors as a creative mop. And the idea of using plastic bags as makeshift drink bottles isn’t new in many parts of the world, but these photographs show that it’s an almost mainstream practice in Thailand. Simply stick a long straw in and you’ve got a portable drink container. These photographs and others can be found in Thomas Kalak’s fantastic book Thailand – Same Same, But Different.

Bike-Powered Lawnmowers

If you saw one reel lawnmower attached to a bike, you might think the person who invented it was extremely creative – which would, of course, be true. But there are so many of these contraptions out there that it’s nearly reached phenomenon status.

Whether the mower is mounted in front of or behind the bike, the bike mower is an ingenious way to use the environmentally-friendly gas-free reel mower with the superior strength of the lower body. Of course, some of these homemade mashups probably work better than others. But there’s no denying the creativity that goes into combining a bike with a lawnmower to create a Flintstones-type riding mower.

Soviet Household Inventions

In the former Soviet Union, household items were often difficult to find and/or afford. So when there was a need for an item, creative people found a way to make it possible. The door mat above is made of beer bottle caps nailed to a piece of wood. The bottle caps helped to scrape the mud off of the shoes of people entering the home. These inventions and many others were compiled by a young Russian man named Vladimir Archipov. He collects them to preserve the folk culture of his country.

There is a new development in kitchen appliances called a “water oven”.This product is the SousVide Supreme Water Oven.I often find that there are new gimmicks in the kitchen all the time, but this one may prove different. The product is designed to cook fish, meat or poultry at a very slow rate which can even extend over a few days. The meat is vacuum sealed along with spices and extras and placed in the water oven. The fact that the meat is sealed allows for all the juice to stay inside as opposed to other cooking methods which often dry out meat.If you have one of these, leave a comment so we can share your experience.Price: $449.95.See the product: here.

USA: Space Race for the Pole

Although the United States has scaled back its spacefaring plans considerably from the heady days of Apollo and Skylab, the general consensus of the country’s astronomical community is that colonization of the moon and planets is inevitable.

Plans are already afoot to establish an American base on the moon, possibly in or near the shadowed Shackleton crater near the moon’s south pole. NASA’s recent LCROSS mission determined that ice exists in the moon’s polar craters into which the sun never shines. Perhaps fittingly, a bill set before Congress mandates that the first American long-term lunar base be named after the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong!

Russia: The East is Ready

Though the former Soviet Union lost the Space Race to the United States, Russian dreams of space exploration live on and may yet “bear” fruition. Russia inherited much knowledge, equipment and experience from the days of the USSR and they’ve managed to keep their hand in the space game by being the world’s heavy lifter. Many pundits feel it’s only a matter of time before Moscow goes over the moon, not to mention Mars.

Much scaremongering took place over Soviet space aspirations during the Cold War and fanciful imagery helped put the fear of a Red Planet – ANY planet – into the fevered imagination of the public.
