Extend to Contend
Welcome to the future of furniture design, where to be static is to be left sitting still! Born of a desire to question contemporary furniture design, this project by Aïssa Logerot called “Extensions” addresses the concept of multipurpose use and the desire for durability and quality. Products in this Extensions project are made in a non-fixed state, made to become whatever they need to be as the situation in which they are in changes!
Assembly first, right there next to concern for eco-design. Aïssa Logerot took into account packaging, transportation, storage, mounting, dismantling, and of course, mantling.
the heck out of the many simple designs made undeniably easy to understand and construct. And as stated, these are adjustable to the max, having many notches and thread adjustments on many different combinations of construction for the top of changeability!

Walyou Geekiest Gadgets of 2009
2009 has been a long and arduous year for most people, and with recession and political issues happening everywhere, technology and science had to take a backseat, or so it seemed. However, the year has been surprisingly busy with activity and several cool gadgets were launched. Most importantly, several new gadgets were bought which underlined the importance of consumption during recession.
Here is a cool list of gadgets that we found were the hottest during this year. These could be used an indication for what could be bought, or what could be upgraded, if you already have similar gadgets.
Mice
There has been no shortage of mice this year and some of the coolest ones were predictably released for those who play video games and those who use Apple Mac.

The Razer Mamba is an awesome wireless laser gaming mouse that is so cool that it almost looks like an haute-couture product! Its slick design and the almost futuristic look make it one of the best products announced or released this year.

Apple’s Magic Mouse is yet another accessory which can be used with computers, Apple iMac or Macbook to be particular. The mouse comes with an incredibly intuitive design and you cannot go wrong when you get yourself this slick mouse. It costs $69 and isn’t too expensive either.
Keyboards
If you always wanted a cool keyboard but have been stuck to something banal and mundane, worry not. In the year 2009, many cool keyboards were launched. Some of the best were the Illuminated Flexible keyboard and the Colorful LED Keyboard.

If you were looking for a cheap but cool keyboard, the Illuminated Flexible Keyboard is a great choice, as it not only looks good but can also be carried around everywhere.

The Colorful Luxeed U5 Dynamic LED Keyboard is something to watch out for. At $149.99, it comes with many features and of course, most importantly looks outlandish and would make the perfect gift for anyone.
Camera

If you always wanted the world’s best camera, you should take a look at the “World’s Fastest Digital Camera“. It can capture details that human eye cannot notice, and costs $1,200. It is the fastest but perhaps not the best!
The Book on The Side
Turn your book upon it’s side, and do not dare you put a soda upon it. Designer Aïssa Logerot turned the book on it’s longer end and found that turning the bookcase on the same axis made for a great way to loosen the space normally taken up by that case on the wall for paintings! Logerot is a furniture maker too, though, so perhaps a dislike for coffee tables came into play!
Yes indeed, in addition to studying industrial design, Aïssa Logerot studied furniture and cabinetmaking at Ecole Boulle. He aims to be both simple and discreet, discreet and practical.
How would this work out for you, book owners?
Wood it be more excellent for you to have this horizontal case, or the more common bookcase today, the vertical?

Amphibious Garden Produces Own Power, Cleans Rivers
[ Filed under Food & Health or in the Energy & Fuel category ]

As we approach World Water Day 2010, it’s important to take a moment to consider just how essential clean drinking water is. More than a billion people worldwide have no access to safe drinking water. Millions die each year from their lack of access to clean, potable water. Many initiatives have been proposed to address this global concern, but it’s a continuing threat in developing nations around the world. Vincent Callebaut Architectures has proposed a novel way to both purify European waterways and raise public awareness of the water shortage problem.

The proposed solution is this self-sufficient, positive-energy floating garden called the Physalia (which means “water bubble”). The design is zero-emission, in keeping with the firm’s commitment to an environmentally-responsible design. But even more importantly, the structure actually produces its own power with photovoltaic cells and hydro-electric turbines. By producing more power than it consumes, the Physalia crosses over into positive-energy territory.

The Physalia is designed to travel between the major rivers of Europe, purifying the water and facilitating international water conservation research. By far, two of the most prominent physical features of the Physalia are its rooftop garden and its massive sunroof. The garden would be nourished by the water in which the vessel floats, while the sunroof and side windows let passengers admire their surroundings. Because of its reflective windows and natural contours, during daylight hours, the vessel looks more like a biological presence or a trick of light than a carefully constructed fluvial craft.

While it glides along in river waters, the TiO2-coated surface reacts with ultraviolet rays to purify the fluvial water. It absorbs and neutralizes waste from agricultural and industrial sources, as well as the water pollution created by other river vessels. It would become a sort of floating laboratory, a testing ground to see just how successful an innovative vessel like this can actually be. At the same time, it could be a floating classroom, a tourist attraction and a conference location all centered around the idea of clean water accessibility.

The vessel itself is an eco-minded traveler’s paradise. It contains four distinct areas with themes based on the four elements. The Water Garden is the vessel’s main entry point. The open-air reception area would house temporary exhibitions and provide a seamless view of the water below and to every side. The Earth Garden houses the research laboratory. The Fire Garden is a womb-like chamber in the underwater section of the Physalia; it features a roaring fire in the fireproof hull and would be home to permanent exhibits on aquatic ecosystems. The Air Garden is described as “an audacious avant-garde project” that would educate visitors about water respect.

Will we ever see a vessel like the Physalia floating between the major rivers of Europe? That remains to be seen. But such an ambitious project would certainly prove to not only raise awareness of the clean water shortage, but also help to cut down on the widespread pollution of river water. Let’s hope that one day, we can look out over the Seine to see this floating bubble drift by.

Frigid Farewells: 10 Vanishing Tropical Glaciers

Going, going, gone. Glaciers have been beating a steady retreat as global warming accelerates, and for some it’s a journey of no return. The most vulnerable mountain & highland glaciers are those in the tropics and their loss could be devastating for the local environment, not to mention the plants, animals and people who have depended on their life-giving water for thousands of years.

Qori Kalis glacier in the Peruvian Andes is retreating at a faster rate than at any time in the past 50 centuries. It’s estimated that the glacier will vanish entirely within the next 5 years. Qori Kalis, the world’s largest tropical glacier, is one of many ice tongues extending down from the Quelccaya Ice Cap, the largest body of ice in the tropics.
(image via: WhyFiles)
Besides the dramatic retreat of the Qori Kalis glacier itself, the most worrisome aspect of the above photo is the new glacial lake that has formed from meltwater. Such high-altitude lakes are often unstable and sudden events such as earthquakes and/or the calving of large icebergs can send huge tsunamis of frigid water cascading down into the populated valleys below.

The snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Range soar up to 16,761 ft (5,109 m) high and were referred to by the ancient Romans as the Mountains Of The Moon, source of the Nile River’s water. Their great heights have not protected the Rwenzori glaciers from the effects of global warming, however. A survey taken in 1906 showed 43 named glaciers with a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.5 sq km) of ice spread across 6 of the range’s tallest mountains. Approximately half of Africa’s total glacial ice was locked into these frozen rivers. A century later more than half of the ice has vanished, leaving a mere 0.6 square miles (1.5 sq km) of ice on just 3 mountains.

The Elena Glacier on Mount Stanley, tallest of the Rwenzori peaks, shows the dramatic shrinkage documented over the past century but which has accelerated alarmingly in the past several decades.

There aren’t many glaciers in Mexico… and soon there will be none. “We estimate the glaciers could last another 20 or 30 years,”says Hugo Delgado, a glaciologist from UNAM university in Mexico City. Twenty years ago glaciers existed on three Mexican volcanoes: Popocatepetl,Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba. By the year 2000 Popocatepetl’s glaciers had vanished though a series of eruptions in the 1990s certainly hastened their demise.

Incredible Humans: 10 Medical Oddities that Will Make Your Heads Spin

The process of growing from a few cells to a fully formed adult is a harrowing one, full of millions of years of evolutionary tricks that help us develop unscathed. Despite everything, there are still mistakes; one missing gene or chromosome, or one too many, and a child’s development can be skewed in a very odd way. It’s remarkable that human growth and development goes so smoothly, despite the numerous opportunities for errors. Here are 10 cases where things went wrong:

(Images via mentalfloss, fancast, miblogdecosasdivertidas, 82muchfood)
It’s pretty easy to assume your child will emerge with two fully formed legs, but sadly, this isn’t always the case. From one leg to four, there are scores of children with rare genetic defects, or people who have incorporated all or most of a twin into their own bodies. The most famous (and recent) example is Lakshmi, who was born with four arms and four legs, and thought by many to be a reincarnation of a Hindu goddess.

(Images via lifeinthefastlane, crazy pics, across the board)
Pituitary glands secrete hormones that tell our bodies to grow. When the gland secretes excessively, you have someone who grows as if they’re an adolescent well beyond puberty. Gigantism requires that a person’s height be several standard deviations above the tallest 1% of the population. Robert Wadlow, the tallest recorded man to ever live, was 8 ft. 11.1 inches tall at the time of his death at the age of 22, and his growth had given no indication of slowing down.

Ectrodactyly is a condition where digits or limbs are either fused or missing. Often called “Lobster Claw Syndrome” a lot of victims of this congenital defect have become sideshow performers, billing themselves with monikers such as “Lobster Boy.” The fused limbs can have surprising functionality in certain cases, but often require the use of a wheelchair.

Dede Koswara has an extremely rare genetic defect known as Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis that renders his body incapable of fighting off various strains of HPV, which is present in 80% of the world population. Dede has become an internet sensation, and is often described as half tree / half man. There have been several made for television documentaries about his condition and his attempts to treat it, but no treatment has been entirely successful.

There is a tribe of people living in Zimbabwe known as the Vadoma, that have become known as the “Ostritch People” for the prevalence of electrodactyly in their population. Many of the tribe members are born with fused toes that appear ostritch like. The tribe maintains a consistent population of such births due to their relative isolation. Those with this condition are not handicapped, and are well integrated into the tribe.

Green Goes Gigantic: Huge Public Gardens & Eco-Museums
[ Filed under Nature & Ecosystems or in the Geography & Travel category ]

Where can you go to learn about naturein both academic environments, and face-to-facein a big way? Some of the worlds largest public gardens and eco-museums contain dazzling arrays of both live and preserved plant specimens, as well as opportunities to get more familiar with our planets natural history. But thats only the beginning. If some of the following as-yet-unbuilt concepts come to pass, in the future well have even bigger indoor gardens, zoos and aquariums.
Sietch Nevada Underground Garden City Concept

(image via: Matsys Design)
In 1965, hidden underground oases of the worlds last remaining freshwater were merely science fiction. But those sietch described in Frank Herberts famous novel Dune are seeming more realistic as the American Southwest struggles with dwindling water supplies. A project called Sietch Nevada envisions turning Herberts vision into reality, storing water in vast underground communities that hum with lifeboth human and plant – far below the dusty surface of the earth.

No matter where you go in the world, youll never find a bigger flower garden than the one at Keukenhof, located near Lisse, Netherlands. Known as the Garden of Europe, Keukenhof is home to more than 7 million flower bulbsmostly iconic Dutch tulips in a rainbow of colors.
Botanischer Garten, Berlin, Germany

(image via: visitberlin.de)
Among the biggest botanical gardens on Earth, Berlins Botanisher Garten is also considered one of the worlds most important. Encompassing an area that measures nearly 430,000 square miles, the garden contains about 22,000 species of plants and consists of a Botanical Museum, a large herbarium, a scientific library and a number of glass houses. One of them, the Great Pavilion, is the largest glass house in the world.
Dochodo Island Zoo Concept, South Korea

(image via: Inhabitat)
Once its built, the Dochodo Island Zoo in South Korea would not only be the biggest, tallest zoo everbut also the most unusual (in shape at least). All transportation, energy sources and building systems would be contained within giant polygonal structures reaching 20 meters into the sky. This so-called infrastructural green belt would make as little an impact on the land itself as possible.
National Botanic Garden, Belgium

(image via: Maribelle71)
Few man-made places can claim that they contain 6% of all the known plant species in the world, but the National Botanic Garden in Belgium is one of the worlds largest botanical gardens and 18,000 plant species call it home. Half can be seen in the greenhouses, while the rest grow outdoors. Also on its grounds is the 12th century Boechout Castle, used for conferences and exhibitions.
