Look Before You Leap: Crazy Parkour Building Jump

(image via: English Russia)
A new video and set of photographs is circulating from St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Parkour movement is gaining a strong foothold among the city’s youth. The video shows a young man jumping from one rooftop to another, with 35 feet of height difference and about 20 feet of space between the buildings.
It’s inspiring mixed feelings from the public and from Parkour enthusiasts. While the stunt was impressive and the stuntman seemed to know what he was doing, it was incredibly dangerous. But the group featured in the video say that they were trying to raise awareness of the sport and point out the problem of a lack of safe, sanctioned places to practice it.
This Russian news story shows another side of the stunt. The man doing the first jump pulled it off perfectly without any problems, but when a friend tried the same jump he injured his leg. We don’t speak Russian so we’re not sure what the newscaster is saying, but judging from his tone it’s not entirely positive.
Parkour is generally seen as a physically challenging sport that’s somewhat dangerous, but not overly so. This video of Austrian traceur Sacha Hauser shows that Parkour isn’t just about taking the biggest risks and evoking the biggest reactions – it’s also a beautiful, artistic use of the human body’s strength.

The Logical Waistcoat Theory

The suit jacket is all but redundant in a modern office. Central heating did away with the need for anything more than a shirt to keep you warm. Then air conditioning ensured the temperature would stay exactly the same, all year round. So no one wears a jacket because they need to.
Plus it’s not the easiest thing to wear if you work at a computer. Even the hacking jacket I have with a bi-swing back doesn’t make it comfortable to sit with your arms outstretched all day. Hunters have to lower their guns occasionally.
In my opinion, a waistcoat is the solution. It leaves your arms free to type at the computer for hours without restraint. You can answer the phone, wave at the tea lady and get that file from Andrew’s desk without discomfort. I have bespoke jackets with very high scyes and large sleeveheads; I often wear them with bespoke shirts that have equally high armholes; a jacket is still never as comfortable as a waistcoat.
But by far the biggest advantage of wearing a waistcoat is that it is smart. If you take any interest in your clothes, you’ll want to give them at least a decent chance of making you look good. And the waistcoat does this.
Suddenly that super-180s Loro Piana wool you carefully picked out is given true rein. Your silhouette is lengthened in much the same way as by a jacket, flattering the figure and keeping the belly tucked in. As a waistcoat is one of the hardest things to make (tight-fitting yet flexible) it shows off the skills of your tailor. It keeps your shirt in orderno matter how fitted a shirt might be, or long its tail, it will always start billowing out around the waistband after a while.
And finally, it keeps the tie in place; for me, this is the greatest pleasure. The tie knot remains prim, at attention. When worn with a waistcoat the tie is contained and supported. It is the focal point, the flash of silk in an otherwise matte outfit. It is an arch of distilled style.
What you wear over your waistcoat can then depend entirely on the weather outside: an overcoat in the winter, a jacket in the spring, nothing in the summer. It’s worth retaining the jacket, as it will always look smartest for meetings, functions and interviews. But it is no longer functionally useless.
Some people, it has to be said, don’t like waistcoatsthey’ve rarely had one made bespoke. They may still consider the silk back too showythen have it in a dark, complementary colour to the suit, or even from the same wool. Anything will help that makes the waistcoat feel like an external garmenta collar, for example, preferably notched.
In my opinion a man working in an office should wear a waistcoat. It is flattering, comfortable and makes the best out of his clothes. This is the Logical Waistcoat Theory.

Slime Stew, Anyone? Giant Snails Battle Malnutrition

(image via: WAG Malawi)
Iron deficiency anemia and malnutrition are among the most serious health concerns in developing African countries. A Nigerian nutritionist is now singing the praises of a food that may help turn that around. Her solution is cheap, readily available, extremely nutritious and – according to the study – quite tasty. The magical food is the giant West African land snail, a huge snail that is easily cultivated but also very readily found in in the forests and swamps of African nations. It’s a notoriously invasive species that is illegal to have in the U.S., though it’s commonly kept as a pet in other countries.

(image via: Planet Catfish)
So how will a snail save starving children? Ukpong Udofia of the University of Uyo reported in her study that the snail’s meat is rich in protein and iron, two very important components of a young child’s diet, as well as other key nutrients. Chronic iron deficiency leads to anemia and can, eventually, result in death. Finding a readily available and affordable source of nutrition is the key to creating a healthier population, and the giant snail easily fulfills both of those requirements. Even more so than beef and other livestock typically grown to provide protein and iron. Snail is also easier and cheaper to grow, consumes far fewer resources during the growing process, and would presumably be mature and ready to eat in a shorter amount of time.

(image via: Treehugger)
But would kids even eat snail meat? Maybe not Western kids who are used to hamburgers and chicken nuggets, but people in Nigeria and surrounding countries have been eating snails all along. When Udofia and her research colleagues conducted a taste test between beef pies and snail pies, most of the mothers and young children interviewed preferred the appearance, taste and texture of the snail pie.

Besides providing essential iron and protein, snail meats provides calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, B6, B12 and K. The meat is low in fat but rich in healthy polyunsaturated fat. Obviously using snails as a regular food source won’t solve the malnutrition problem in Africa overnight, but cultivating the lower-cost alternative to beef and other protein sources could save countless lives in the long run.
