Cleaning your home or vacuuming it need not be a problem or a major task any longer, especially with the arrival of the robotic vacuum cleaner from Neato Robotics. This robotic vacuum cleaner uses laser technology to completely study your home and avoid obstacles or impediments in its way, during cleaning sessions.

This is possible because of its 360 degree viewing ability, which helps it to map your room, including walls, furniture and other aspects that are present in your room before beginning to clean it. The systematic pattern of its cleaning ensures complete cleaning of your room, without leaving a single corner or place. This ensures that you no longer have to haul those large vacuum cleaners around the house and still feel dissatisfied at the cleaning ability. These Neato robotics vacuum cleaners sense the entire situation and act accordingly; thereby allowing you more free time to attend to other things, while still maintaining a clean and sparkling home.

You can get the Neato robotics vacuum cleaners from January 2010 onwards and it will cost you $399.

Look Before You Leap: Crazy Parkour Building Jump

(image via: English Russia)

A new video and set of photographs is circulating from St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Parkour movement is gaining a strong foothold among the city’s youth. The video shows a young man jumping from one rooftop to another, with 35 feet of height difference and about 20 feet of space between the buildings.

It’s inspiring mixed feelings from the public and from Parkour enthusiasts. While the stunt was impressive and the stuntman seemed to know what he was doing, it was incredibly dangerous. But the group featured in the video say that they were trying to raise awareness of the sport and point out the problem of a lack of safe, sanctioned places to practice it.

This Russian news story shows another side of the stunt. The man doing the first jump pulled it off perfectly without any problems, but when a friend tried the same jump he injured his leg. We don’t speak Russian so we’re not sure what the newscaster is saying, but judging from his tone it’s not entirely positive.

Parkour is generally seen as a physically challenging sport that’s somewhat dangerous, but not overly so. This video of Austrian traceur Sacha Hauser shows that Parkour isn’t just about taking the biggest risks and evoking the biggest reactions – it’s also a beautiful, artistic use of the human body’s strength.

Fanning the Future: Kids Bring Wind Farm to Utah Town

Most of us know that there are ways to make the world a greener place, but we get frustrated when we don’t see our actions making an immediate difference. A group of high school kids in rural Milford, Utah, are seeing the benefits of their efforts, and in a big way. The kids and their teacher Andy Swapp are responsible for bringing a 200 megawatt wind farm to their town – that’s enough energy to power 44,000 Southern California homes. The resulting increase in tax revenue has revitalized the town’s economy, and the whole project has given the town’s residents an increased sense of pride in their community.

Milford High School teacher Andy Swapp’s curiosity was piqued one day when he was plowing a field on his farm. The wind blew so hard that the soil he’d plowed up effectively sandblasted the side of his barn. Seeing the wind’s power made him wonder just how hard it was blowing, which led to him obtaining an anemometer to measure its strength. The teacher couldn’t let this unique learning experience go to waste, so he invited his students to his farm to help him put up the tower. Within weeks, energy companies showed an interest in the project and Swapp’s data.

That little class project eventually turned into a 200MW wind farm backed by First Wind. Already, the town of Milford is reporting increased revenues in service and retail segments of their economy. A new hospital is being built with the tax funds generated by the farm. And maybe the best part of this project is the reaction from the students and other Milford residents. They have a renewed sense of pride in their hometown and the knowledge that they can do great things that will impact countless other people. Their wind farm isn’t just an environmental achievement or a community service project – it’s an inspiration to everyone who ever thought that they couldn’t make a difference. What started out as a fun field trip has turned into a project that stabilized a town’s economy, renewed the residents’ sense of community, and moved the entire country one step closer to clean power.

The first phase of the Milford Wind Corridor Project became operational in October 2009. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the 97 towers and wind turbines cover more than 40 square miles and connect to an 88-mile-long transmission line providing power to Southern California. The entire project cost over $400 million and invested about $84.5 million in Utah businesses and laborers. The project created 240 related jobs in construction and operation. There’s more information about the Milford project and other First Wind projects at their website.

Magical Music: 5 of the World’s Weirdest Instruments

Most music lovers can agree that music doesn’t always follow the rules. Some of the most beautiful melodies have come from artists who chose to do their own thing despite conventional wisdom. The same is true for artists who create new instruments. Where would modern music be without the “crazy” instruments and techniques invented and modified over the years? These instruments are among the most innovative, the most creative, and the most bizarre out there.

Uberorgan

When Los Angeles artist Tim Hawkinson toured around the country with a massive indoor sculpture, he caused big reactions from just about everyone who saw it. Many of them wondered just what it was, and they can be forgiven for not understanding immediately. After all, the 300-foot long sculpture was comprised largely of 13 bus-sized inflated bags and was simultaneously organic and alien. But when it started playing, it was obvious: the Uberorgan was a massive musical instrument. The entire assembly looked like massive ethereal jellyfish suspended in mid-air, but operated like the giant lovechild of a bagpipe and a pipe organ. A visual sensor “read” notes from a scrolling 200-foot-long roll of Mylar to entertain viewers with a score he composed just for the Uberorgan.

The Great Stalacpipe Organ

(images via: Oddmusic)

The world’s largest instrument resides in a cave in Virginia, and the music it produces is both earthy and otherworldly. The Great Stalacpipe Organ was created in 1954 after Pentagon scientist Leland W. Sprinkle noticed that the stalactites in Luray Caverns produced resonating notes upon being struck. He spent three years tuning stalactites to precise pitches – with sandpaper. He then wired rubber mallets to strike the stalactites when corresponding keys are depressed on the organ’s keyboard. The organ still plays today for visitors to Luray Caverns.

The Nano Guitar

If you thought playing a ukulele was hard, try plucking this tiny guitar. It’s a six-string guitar made of crystalline silicon, and it’s no bigger than a single cell. Each string is 50 nanometers wide: the width of 100 atoms. Researchers at Cornell University created it in 1997 to showcase emerging technology for manufacturing a new generation of electronics. Though it can technically be played (if you happen to have access to an atomic force microscope), the 10 micrometer-long instrument would only resonate at inaudible frequencies.

Croatia’s Sea Organ

Visitors to the sea front in Zadar, Croatia used to be greeted by grim, ugly concrete walls. But since the public unveiling of the Sea Organ in 2005, visitors have been able to visit the sea front tothe music of nature. The Sea Organ is a musical instrument that consists of 35 musical tubes with openings on the above concrete stairs. Movement of the sea’s waves pushes air through the openings, creating incredible chords and dissonant tunes. Similar instruments exist in San Francisco and Blackpool, but Zadar’s version can be heard more consistently and has done wonders for the tourist trade in the area.

Milky Way Clock Is Truely A Stellar Make

Gone are the days when clocks and time pieces were mere objects that served the purpose of displaying time, as Henrik Amberla proves just this point with his new project aptly titled Milky Way Clock.

This masterpiece is anything but an ordinary clock. Built with looks that would distract people from the time and rather make them follow the smooth curves on this clock, this time piece remains true to its name The Milky Way Clock.

The minimalistic and utilitarian designs that is mastered and people world love, is prominent in this clock. The white color would signify the “Milky” and the manner in which the form of the clock elegantly twines about would be the reason why the creator has linked this piece of art to the Milky Way Galaxy.

Henrik has described the shape as one that depicts the duality and unity of the sleep/wake cycle, with the clock having three faces. Each face is lit using OLED’s (probably).

An alarm is put into snooze mode by turning the clock over and another turn would allow the user to set the alarm and time. This is probablydone using gyroscopes as in iPhones and iTouches and numerous other devices.

Step aside boring old clocks because works of art like the Milky Way Clock are storming in and making a place in our heart and bed side table

Talking Robot Alarm Clock Awaits Your Nose Press

Image

Some new designers have decided that pressing the nose of a Robot to tell the time is more fun than simply seeing the time displayed, so Kim the Talking Robot was created for that purpose only, and Kim seems fairly happy with that.

Unlike the Perfect Woman Robot, Kim the Robot is not meant to look like a real woman or sound like a woman, but she does provide its practical and funny utlity…she audibly tells you the time once you press her nose.

Image

Besides the practical part, Kim is a round faced Robot with a cool copper streak of hair wrapped around her head with little cute curls at its ends. She always provides you a half smile, as if she knows something you don’t, but she does…the current time. Powered by only three AAA batteries which are included, Kim also provides an alarm clock with beeps or crows.

A cute Christmas gift idea for the Geeks who need an additional companion, Kim runs for only $49.99 and could be a techy soul to talk to.

Magnetic Dice Rubik’s Cube for a Cool Alternative

Here is a cool way to see and play with the Rubik’s Cube, which has been built using red dice, making it a little less colorful but still as challenging.

There are many Rubik’s Cube fans Worldwide but although we cannot deny the power and hypnotizing effect of the colorful cube, a different look would be a great and refreshing alternative, as done in this version or the Rubik’s Cube Sandwich.

Similar to the Magnetic Rubik’s Cube we seen before, this is also a homemade Magnetic creation but which uses Red Dice instead of clear squares. The result is amazing and still makes all sides different and leaves a clear solution to be reached. The Paper Rubik’s Cube on the other hand was a great creation, but without using color paper or some kind of symbols, it is not in fact the puzzle but simply a cube with twisting sides.

For Rubik’s Cube fans, this is another awesome way to play the famous puzzle game.

Roomba Pacman Game Makes Me Want to Clean My Home

This cool presentation shows an intricate Roomba Pacman Game that was finely tuned to have Pacman both play the actual game and make sure to clean up as he runs his rounds.

Unlike the previous Pacman Roomba Vacuum we seen, this specific video presents the original Pacman Game being played utilizing 5 separate Roomba Vacuums: one for Pacman and four for the four separate ghosts from the Pacman arcade game.

The Pacman video shows a demonstration of the video and also explains the intelligence system behind the actual game. It includes Pacman truly needing to stay our of harm’s way, the ghosts recognizing the Pacman Roomba thus moving to ‘chase mode’, Pacman powerup which in turn can ‘eat’ and disqualify a ghost and more fun stuff.

The Red tape seen in the video is for video demonstration only, and i not required to provide Pacman any direction through his game field.

Check out the cool Roomba Pacman video below and tell us how bad you want the set of 5 Roombas in your home.

Malcolm Frontier Mojito Wallet Review

Only $20! I bet that caught your attention. It’s no joke. The Mojito Wallet is available at a reduced priced direct from Malcolm Fontier. If the name isn’t familiar – the company makes vegan (synthetic) leather soft goods with lots of style at a fraction of the price. Male readers can probably empathize with my wallet woes. I carry a bulky leather wallet big and heavy enough to change the way I walk. The Mojito is one of the slimmest wallets I’ve seen and for $20, there’s no competition around.

The design is quite simple. To achieve slimness you have to sacrifice space. Instead of carrying 10 cards you can only carry 4 or in my case 2 cards and some cash. That’s usually all I need on a day to day basis. I took the Mojito to Disneyland for a trial run. The bungee strap kept my credit card and ID secure in the center slot. The secondary slot held cash and my fast passes. Downsizing was a joy. Bulky-butt syndrome (an overstuffed wallet in a back pocket )was a distant memory. I didn’t miss my regular wallet at all. The Mojito didn’t stretch and pulling things in and out was easy unlike the $80 Tumi slim wallet I had. The PU material and stitching are top-notch and it doesn’t give off that nasty rubbery smell.

$20! I’ll say it over and over again. It’s a perfect gift. It may not replace your main wallet but it’s great for occasions when bulky-butt is prohibited – say dress slacks. Buy one for yourself, a boyfriend, father, friends – anyone who is in dire need of bulky-butt syndrome.

SoundRacer Gadget Makes Your Car Roar Loud

If your car is not that fast, doesn’t have that much power, and doesn’t have enough to make it Roar, then the SoundRacer gadget could be a great option to give your car a little life.

Many said that if you want to be tough, you have to act tough or in other words…fake it until you make it. Well, the SoundRacer allows small time and powerless vehicles to fill a little juice and make them sound a lot more bad-ass then they truly are.

The way it works is that the SoundRacer hooks up to your car charger for power and transmits really V8 or V10 sounds through your car’s stereo by the FM Transmitter. Moreover, based on SoundRacer specs, it actually works along with your car’s RPMs, so when you will rev up your family van at a red light, it will work according to your lead foot.

Seems like a great toy for boys who want to be Men, or Men who simply cannot afford the roaring cars. Either way, for only $39.99, the SoundRacer is a fun toy that is harmless and would make Tim the Toolman excited.

For other cool car posts, check out the Pimp Pacman Car, the Transparent Lexus and the cool Viper Smart Start iPhone App.
