Recycle Your Dumpster: Awesome Urban Art & Adaptive Reuse

How many different ways can you upcycle a dumpster? In a project called Skip Conversions, eco-conscious artist Oliver Bishop Young proved that what used to be grimy, unsanitary trash receptacles can be transformed for a myriad of uses including swimming pools, skateboard ramps, gardens and even public toilets.

The Goldsmiths University graduate created a stunning urban art project that highlights the versatility of what many people consider a single-use item. It brings together guerilla installation art, recycling, upcycling and freeganism.

Part of the charm of this installation is its accessibility, with converted dumpsters located on public streets, giving passersby a chance to not only change their perceptions of what dumpsters are for, but interact with the upcycled art.

Simply adding a custom liner and some water gives dumpster diving a new meaning, while a few pieces of bent plywood and tape create a miniature skate ramp. A rug, television and seating create a cozy little living space, soil and seeds bring some color to urban environments and a bed of grass becomes an impromptu stage.

Though the project is no longer active, Skip Conversions is a great example of just how creative people can get with adaptive reuse, literally transforming trash into treasure in a way that also unites communities for fun outdoor activities.

Even More Urban Light Graffiti

Architectural light graffiti, or projection bombing, falls somewhere curiously in between.

We found this interesting design idea while surfing around PillowsandThrows.com. Pixels is basically an add-on to furniture items as we know them. The dots embedded in the materials completely change the visual effect of any product and also the focal point of the room, being given that the color is also strong- like in the picture below for example. Available in a wide range of textures and colors, these designs are very easy to adapt in any interior. You can use them as wall decors, as tiles for your kitchen or as headboards, it is all up to you and your imagination. 10 Insane Interiors and Radical Room Designs

It’s been said there’s a fine line between creativity and insanity, and the more creative designers get, the more insane their creations become. These 10 insane interiors and radical room designs show what happens when one moves beyond the fundamental to, well, just mental.

Propeller Island City Lodge

Travelers to Berlin rave about the formerly divided city’s wild & crazy nightlife. While nightclubbers can easily get their fill of the former, a stay at the Propeller Island City Lodge will provide a hefty dose of the latter.

Each of the hotel’s 45 rooms is designed by Lars Stroschen and decorated in a different theme, ranging from peaceful and dreamy to bizarre and nightmarish. Take the Symbol Room, for instance. The walls, floor, ceiling, even the bedroom furniture have been decorated with 300 symbols taken from Stroschen’s decidedly odd imagination.

Nautilus House

In designing the Nautilus House, Mexican architect Javier Senosiain appears to have channeled Lewis Carroll after ingesting some particularly bad acid.

On the other hand, and unlike most drug-induced schemes, the Nautilus House is fully functional inside and out, though it might take a very dysfunctional family to actually live in it. Senosiain’s genius shifts into high gear when visitors enter the house. There’s a reason the chambered nautilus never leaves its chambers – if it looks this good, who would?

The Cave Room

If Barbara DArcy’s 1973 book The Bloomingdales Book of Home Decorating is to be believed, we should all be living in stylishly decorated caves by now. Turns out, only Bin Laden is… though he seems to be having a grand old time of it.
